Floods

Facts

  • It takes only 6 inches of fast-flowing water to sweep you off your feet.  Two feet of water will carry away most automobiles.  Nearly half of all flash flood fatalities are auto related.  Never try to walk, wsim or drive through flood waters.
  • Warm season flash floods are the result of intense rainfalls over a short period of time, due to slow moving thunderstorms.

What You Can Do

  • Get out of areas subject to flooding, including dips, low spots, canyons and washes.
  • Avoid already flooded and high velocity areas.
  • Do not camp or park your vehicle along streams and washes, particularly during threatening conditions.
  • Never drive through flooded roadways.  If your vehicle stalls, leave it immediately and seek higher ground.
