The GIS (Geographic Information Systems) Coordinator in Kewaunee County’s Land Information Office has worked very closely with the Land & Water Conservation Department for the past 5+ years.  This has enabled the LWCD to utilize GIS technology on a daily basis.  In addition to using base data such as USGS topo maps, tax parcels, field boundaries, and orthophotography the LWCD has created several custom GIS layers.  These layers have been incorporated into maps for groundwater protection recommendations, manure spreading hazard areas, non-metallic mining, ag preservation planning, and well testing results.

You can view or download maps for the following:

Manure Spreading Hazard Areas                            LWCD Groundwater Protection Recommendations                            USGS Topo Maps

Some of the GIS layers that have been created for the LWCD include:

  • wetland restorations
  • abandoned wells
  • fracture traces
  • sinkholes
  • bedrock outcrops
  • closed depressions
  • watersheds & subwatersheds
  • wetlands
  • water quality management areas
  • well test locations
  • hydro layers (streams, lakes, ponds, etc.)
  • soils-related layers (slope classes, attenuation potential, karst soils, clay soils, etc.)
  • transect survey stops and data collection points
  • manure storage locations
  • locations of licensed dairy operations

In the future, the LWCD is hoping to acquire a GIS layer for the 2 foot contour lines.  This elevation data would be very useful for preliminary planning and design work.
