2nd Annual Ahnapee Trail Century Saturday, September 24th - Click Here For More Information

More than a century since railroad bells rang and train whistles blown for the first time, quiet has returned to the Kewaunee and Door County countryside. A "rails to trails" conversion has removed the tracks. During spring, summer, and fall hikers, bikers, horseback riders, share the trail. In winter, cross country skiers and snowmobilers whisk across its frosty surface.

The Ahnapee State Trail spans about 44 miles between Kewaunee, Luxemburg, Casco, Algoma and Sturgeon Bay. The 8 to 10 foot trail has a firm limestone surface for hiking, trail bikes and horseback riding. During the winter the trail is used primarily by snowmobilers - though cross-country skiing is also permitted - The trail interconnects with numerous miles of snowmobile trails in Kewaunee and Door County.

General Etiquette/Rules for all Trail Users

1. Pets must be kept on leashes and kept under control.

2. Protect our environment. Stay on the trail. Do not cut switchbacks or use shortcuts.

2. Stay to the right and pass on the left. Always look before changing positions on the trail.

3. Carry out all litter, including your pet’s waste.

4. When encountering a horse, speak in a calm, pleasant tone so the horse hears a human voice. Do not hide.

5. The rider knows the horse the best. Expect the rider to advise you, not as a lack of courtesy, but rather with knowledge of the horse’s temperament.

6. All horse waste must be moved off the trail surface.

6. Do not approach, scare, harass, or feed wildlife or livestock.

7. Respect private property and the privacy of people living along the trail.

8. Leave flowers and plants for others to enjoy. Do not pull bark off of, cut or otherwise damage live trees.

9. The Ahnapee State Trail is closed to horses from November 15th through April 15th annually to prevent damage to the trail.

The Friends of the Ahnapee Trail is a grass roots organization developed in 1988 to help restore the deteriorating conditions of the trail.  From when the trail was formed in 1975, it had not received adequate funds or attention.  The non-profit organization continues to work for the promotion, development, and maintenance of the trail today.  Publications, special events, community programs, and “hands-on” trail projects are used to create awareness of the recreational and environmental benefits the trail brings to the area.    The “Friends” partner with the County Parks Departments to help monitor trail use and condition, plan improvement, and solicit funds to support the trail and it’s development. The volunteer organization welcomes and encourages new members.  For more information on the Friends of the Ahnapee State Trail, please write to E4280 County F, Kewaunee, WI 54216.  Also visit the “Friends” website at www.ahnapeetrail.org
