Community
Options Program
History:
The Community Options Program was set up in Wisconsin in the 1980's
as a cost efficient alternative to nursing homes or institutions for people with
long term health needs who also have limited personal funding. The goal was to
provide quality of life in the most cost effective way. For those preferring to
stay in their own home or apartment, the Community Options Program becomes a
situation in which everyone wins.
- The Community Options
Program can assist senior citizens and others who might be eligible for
nursing home or institutional care who are currently living in a home or
apartment and would like to stay there. The program will provide services
that will support them in their home environment.
- A senior citizen or
person with a disability who has experienced a health emergency which
resulted in a hospital or nursing home stay, is sometimes able to return to
their home or apartment with services from COP especially if they have some
support from family members, friends, or neighbors.
- Some individuals may
also have the option of moving into a community based residential facility (CBRF)
which is often referred to as an assisted living home. This would be based
on room availability at a local CBRF, funding, and an individual’s personal
financial situation.
