What is Emergency Management?
It is a vital link in a complex network of services, which makes it possible for disasters and emergencies to be dealt with effectively. Although the responsibilities of our office vary greatly, our main purpose is to support response agencies and departments within Kewaunee County in the event of a disaster or emergency. Emergency Management is a County office mandated by the State of Wisconsin under the authority of Wisconsin Statutes Chaper 323. It is supported by county funds, most of which is reimbursed though federal and state grants, as well as by Point Beach Nuclear Plant, as Kewaunee County is considered a Risk County. Emergency Management comprises organized analysis, planning, decision making and assignment of available resources to mitigate (lessening the effect of or preventing), prepare for, respond to and recover from the effects of all hazards. Continuous planning is necessary and has become even more important since the events of September 11, 2001.
What does it mean that Kewaunee County is a Risk County?
Kewaunee County receives from Wisconsin Emergency Management Radiological Emergency Preparedness Program (REP) coordinated planning and training guidance to provide reasonable assurance to public safety involving the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC)-licensed commercial nuclear power plant, Point Beach Nuclear Plant. Kewaunee County receives assistance from REP to ensure adequate response capabilites to protect the public. With that the lower portion of Kewaunee County is within what is called the 10-mile Emergency Planning Zone of Point Beach Nuclear Plant, this makes Kewaunee County a Risk County.
What does the Emergency Management Office do?
- Work with local emergency response agencies and governmental units to prepare for a coordinated response to disaster situations
- Coordinates educational opportunities through Wisconsin Emergency Management and FEMA
- Disaster Mitigation and Planning
- Hazardous Material Facility Off-site Planning
- Identify Community Right-to-Know - Hazardous Material Sites
- Coordinates / Administrates the County's use of our mass notification system, RAVE Alert, to provide alerts to the public
