Back to School Program Helps Hundreds of Kewaunee County Kids
KEWAUNEE, WI – The Annual Back to School Program hosted by the Kewaunee County Public Health Department has helped more than 330 children from over 160 families get ready for the 2021-22 school year.
The event held on Wednesday, August 11th at Lakehaven Hall in Kewaunee gave students the opportunity to choose from thousands of donated school supplies, which included backpacks, notebooks, folders, binders, crayons, markers, scissors, glue, tissues, books, shoes, and water bottles.
The COVID-19 vaccine was also offered to attendees as part of this year’s program.
“It’s not only important to us that we’re able to provide some of the necessary school supplies to families in need to help their children to learn in the classrooms, but as we’re still in the middle of a pandemic it’s equally as important that we create an awareness that the COVID-19 vaccine is available for those as young as 12 years old, which is why we had offered it as part of this year’s program, in hope of vaccinating individuals who may not have otherwise gone out to get the vaccine for their children or themselves,” says Cindy Kinnard, RN, Director of the Kewaunee County Public Health Department.
The Public Health Department would also like to give special thanks to area business and individuals for their supply and/or monetary donations to make this program a success as well as the Board of Lakehaven Hall for the donated event space.
The mission of the Back to School program is to help Kewaunee County families who are on WIC, Food Share or Badger Care as well as those who partake in the free or reduced meal programs or have found themselves in an emergency situation.
