Governor Evers approves WIS 42 improvements in Kewaunee County
​Construction and highway full closure begins June 1, 2021
(Kewaunee) To invest in Wisconsin’s transportation system, Governor Evers signed a $5.1 million contract to improve 9.9 miles of WIS 42 from the south Kewaunee/Manitowoc County line to Baumeister Drive in the city of Kewaunee. The project will begin Tuesday, June 1, 2021 and scheduled to finish in October of 2021. WIS 42 will be closed and detoured when construction begins.
Northeast Asphalt, Inc. from Greenville, Wis. is the Prime Contractor.

Project improvements
This is a resurfacing-level project with replacement of two large box culvert under the roadway. Work includes:
  • Mill and resurface the existing asphalt pavement
  • Replace deteriorating box culvert 300′ south of Lakeview Drive
  • Replace deteriorating box culvert ¾-mile north of County J
  • Repair/replace various culvert pipes in work zone
  • Storm sewer, beamguard and pavement marking
  • Rumble strip installation
  • Minor grading and shoulder widening

Traffic impacts
WIS 42 will be CLOSED AND DETOURED to through traffic from Tuesday, June 1, 2021 to September 2021 for culvert work and construction on the lower level of pavement.
  • Access will be maintained to businesses and properties in the work zone.
  • Temporary business signing information is available on the project website below.
  • Flagging operations will be used for work conducted not under full closure. 
  • WIS 42 northbound: County BB west to County AB north to WIS 29 east back to WIS 42.
  • WIS 42 southbound: WIS 29 west to County AB south to County BB east to WIS 42. 
Project benefits
The project will address minor deformations and cracking in the pavement surface which will reduce surface roughness and provide smoother driving surface for motorists. The asphalt overlay will also extend the life of the existing pavement. Upgrades to guard rail and the addition of centerline and edge line rumble strips will enhance safety.
